History

People settled in Sancheong-gun at the end of the Neolithic Era. The remains of the dolmen are found in Seondong, Gangnu-ri, Danseong-myeon.
The remains of the Bronze Age have been found in Oksan-ri and Nae-ri, Sancheong-eup and Deokgyo-ri, Samjang-myeon such as polished stone tools and earthenware.

5th ~ 6th CenturyA tribal country allying itself with Gaya was established - Eoseo-ri, Saengcho-myeon and Jungchon-ri, Sinan-myeon Ancient Tombs.
75716th year of King Gyeongdeok‘s reign. Saneum-hyeon and Daneup-hyeon were renamed Gweolseong-gun. Saneum-hyeon and Daneup-hyeon became prefectures of Gweolseong-gun.
76322nd year of King Gyeongdeok‘s reign. Dansoksa Temple and Samjangsa Temple, etc. were built and Sancheong-gun became one of the big centers of Buddhism.

995Gweolseong-gun was renamed Gangseong-hyeon and demoted to Gangseong-gun and Daneup-hyeon was renamed Dangye-hyeon.
10189th year of King Hyeonjong‘s reign. Gangseong-gun belonged to Jinju-mok and Saneum-hyeon and Dangye-hyeon belonged to Hapju.
136312th year of King Gongmin‘s reign. Mun Ik-jeom brought cottonseeds from Yuan Dynasty.
13902nd year of King Gongyang‘s reign. A Gammu was appointed in Saneum-hyeon and Gangseong-hyeon and Dangye-hyeon was reinstated to be Gangseong-hyeon.

13991st year of King Jeongjong‘s reign. Gangseong-hyeon and Myeongjin-hyeon in Yeongseon were combined and they were renamed Jinseong-myeon.
141313th year of King Taejong‘s reign. Saneum-hyeon was moved to where Sancheong-eup is now and a governor was appointed.
143214th year of King Sejong‘s reign. Myeongjin-hyeon was reinstated and Dangye-hyeon and Gangseong-hyeon were integrated to become Danseong-hyeon before a governor was appointed.
155510th year of King Myeongjong‘s reign. Nammyeong Jo Sik built Sancheonjae.
159225th year of King Seonjo‘s reign. As Japanese Invasion of Korea broke out, Jo Jong-do and Iro, among others, gathered volunteer corps and supported Jinjuseong Fortress against the siege of Jinju.
159932nd year of King Seonjo‘s reign. Part of Danseong-hyeon was incorporated into Saneum-hyeon.
16135th year of King Gwanghaegun‘s reign. Danseong-hyeon was reinstated.
176743rd year of King Yeongjo‘s reign. Saneum-hyeon was renamed Sancheong-hyeon.
189532nd year of King Gojong‘s reign. Sancheong-hyeon was reorganized as Sancheong-gun and Danseong-gun.
1906Six myeons including Samjang, Sicheon, Geumman, Baekgok, Sawol, Paji were integrated into Sancheong-gun.

1914Danseong-gun was integrated into Sancheong-gun.
1919Gwak Jong-seok and Kim Hwang among others gathered Confucian scholars and submitted petition for Korean independence for international peace during March First Independence Movement.

1948 ~ 1952Sancheong-gun suffered a national ordeal caused by brutality of Jirisan communist guerrillas during Yoesu-Suncheon Rebellion and the Korean War between 1948 and 1952.
1962Seobu Branch of Sancheong-gun was established in Danseong-myeon.
1967Jirisan National Park was designated.
1975Seoha Branch was established in Geumseo-myeon.
1979Sancheong-myeon was raised to the state of Sancheong-eup.
1983Jungtae-ri, Okjong-myeon, Hadong-gun was incorporated into Sicheon-myeon.
